Since the passing of the CARES Act in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, many of you have asked about filing for unemployment in Florida. Below is the most recent update on unemployment assistance for Realtors.
Florida’s unemployment system has to be modified to accept applications from independent contractors. We will advise as soon as it is ready.
As of April 2, 2020, based on guidance from Florida Realtors, members should wait to submit their unemployment applications because the State of Florida has to develop a system to accept applications from individuals who, before the CARES Act, would have been ineligible. The State of Florida will be taking advantage of the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, which was included in the CARES Act, and expands who is covered because of COVID-19. The Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) manages Florida’s unemployment CONNECT system and their COVID-19 FAQs are here. The DEO has issued an emergency request for proposal in order to develop a mobile app and website function that would accomplish this goal, and Governor Ron DeSantis has instructed the DEO to expedite this process in Executive Order 20-93.
