Changing Communities: MIAMI Realtors Sponsors, Participates in Underline Bike Ride

by | Jan 10, 2018

MIAMI REALTORS® sponsored and participated in a bike ride for The Underline in May 2017. The Underline Cycling Club and supporters rode from Dadeland North Metrorail Station to Vizcaya Museum & Gardens and back, 16 miles.

"This is one of the most exciting projects from the viewpoint of the MIAMI Realtors," 2017 MIAMI Chairman Christopher Zoller said at April's bike ride event. "We cannot tell you how much we believe that the Underline will provide a 10-mile lone spine along which businesses and residents will thrive."

The vision of the Friends of The Underline is to transform the underutilized land under the Metrorail into a 10-mile linear park with biking paths and pedestrian trails.

Called the Underline, the project is expected to cost $120 million. In late 2016, the City of Miami committed $50 million to build it, and the rest of the money is still being fundraised.

Construction is underway and should wrap up by 2020.

The Underline was designed by New York City-based firm James Corner Field Operations, which envisioned Manhattan's famed elevated park, the High Line.

The design follows the rising trend of urban projects, like the Wabash Lights in Chicago and the Burnside Skatepark in Portland, that have turned underpasses into public parks.

The plan calls for two parallel paths. One path for cyclists will be 10 feet wide and another for pedestrians will be eight feet wide.

About MIAMI Realtors Changing Communities

REALTORS® don’t just sell properties, we invest in communities. In 2017, MIAMI REALTORS® invested more than $100,000 in grant funds from the National Association of REALTORS(R) (NAR) to improve our South Florida communities.

Through member engagement and feedback, MIAMI developed a list of local community projects that could have the most impact. MIAMI invited its 46,000-plus membership for a brainstorming session and more than 200 members contributed ideas and volunteered to help.

In 2017, MIAMI hosted more than 10 local community initiatives, from helping create a new Miami Shores community destination to re-painting Miami Gardens commercial buildings. Each project was led by the Realtor who proposed it and supported by a team of fellow Realtor volunteers and a Realtor partner (usually an elected official).

More MIAMI Realtors Changing Communities initiatives are planned for 2018.

MIAMI members can register to volunteer at our upcoming community events at:
