Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: MIAMI Chairman Carries Association Legacy

by | May 23, 2018

By Chris Umpierre

MIAMI Staff

George C. Jalil knows how fortunate he is. He has worked with two of Miami’s most significant Realtors.

Jalil worked under Ted Pappas, the 1971-72 MIAMI Association of REALTORS® (MIAMI) board president, when he was starting out as a Realtor. And for the past 10 years, Jalil has worked with Eddie San Roman, the 1990-91 MIAMI board president.

“Ted Pappas and Eddie San Roman are giants in the local real estate industry, and they each have helped me in many ways,” said Jalil, who is in his 41st year of selling Miami real estate. “Ted Pappas trained me and helped me become a better speaker. And from Eddie, I’ve learned about the management of a company and how to grow your company and promote managers.”

Jalil made sure to thank Pappas, who passed away in 2011, and San Roman in his inauguration speech as the 2018 MIAMI Chairman of the Board. Jalil, who is the managing broker and president of Real Living First Service Realty, never envisioned leading the nation’s largest local Realtor association. It is a development that happened naturally after he began volunteering with the board in 2012.

“I’m a late bloomer in volunteering as a MIAMI Leader,” Jalil said with a laugh.

The Ted Pappas Years

Jalil, whose family moved to Miami from New York when he was 14, had planned on becoming a civil engineer as he neared his high school graduation. His uncle, who was a Realtor in New York, gave him some advice.

“My uncle said, ‘It’s pretty cool to build a bridge but how about finding people their dream home?’” Jalil remembered.

With his uncle’s prodding, the then 18-year-old Jalil got his real estate license.

Usually Realtors struggle in their first year in the industry. Not Jalil. In 1977, his people skills allowed him to get a 51 listings, a record in his real estate office at the time. Jalil said it was one of his best years in terms of numbers.

The more success he had, the more he got excited about real estate.

Soon, Jalil got a job at Keyes Company. The real estate firm is the largest independent firm in Florida. Pappas was Keyes’ CEO and immediately promoted Jalil to become the manager of Keyes’ NE office at 51st and Biscayne.

“Ted Pappas was an engaging public speaker,” Jalil said. “The first time I heard him speak, I said I wanted to be like him. I wanted to speak publicly like him. That was the big fear I had. Ted trained me and helped me become a better speaker. That was his biggest contribution to me. I use it every business day.”

The Eddie San Roman Years

In 2008, Jalil started working with San Roman. San Roman still holds the record as the youngest board president in MIAMI real estate history. San Roman was just 25 years old when he became board president in 1990.

San Roman is the chairman of the board for Real Living First Service Realty, founded in 1982. San Roman earned his real estate license at the age of 18 and was named Realtor of the Year shortly thereafter. Since then, he has helped the growth of First Service Realty, overseeing its expansion from its lone Miami office to multiple offices statewide plus Georgia.

“From Eddie, I have learned more about the management of a company,” Jalil said. “He has great ideas on how to grow his company and promote managers.”

San Roman would ask Jalil to consider volunteering on the MIAMI board. Jalil was originally shy about putting his name into leadership.

About eight years ago, he changed his mind and slowly got involved. He became a state director and then a governor for the MIAMI residential board.

Jalil was stunned when he was selected as the 2018 MIAMI Chairman. The fact that he would be following in the footsteps of Pappas rocked him.

“I started as a 21-year-old working with a MIAMI association president and now 41 years later, I have the extreme honor of being MIAMI Chairman,” Jalil said. “It’s amazing.”

Changing Communities

Jalil is a strong proponent of MIAMI’s Changing Communities program. In 2017, MIAMI led 11 community initiatives thanks to more than $100,000 in grants from NAR. Last year’s initiatives included feeding the homeless, painting commercial buildings in Miami Gardens and creating a new community destination in Miami Shores. MIAMI is planning more community initiatives in 2018.

“Realtors know what Realtors do, but I don’t think the public knows,” Jalil said. “The public just knows we sell houses, we have an MLS and we have open houses. You know all the clichés. Realtors are the heart of the local community and I love the Changing Communities program because it shows what Realtors are really about.

“My ultimate goal is I want an agent to go to a listing appointment and say, ‘Yes, I’m part of the association that put together that dog park for the community.’”

Leaving a Legacy like Ted Pappas

Jalil isn’t the only one in his family in real estate.

His wife, Marylou Jalil, is a Realtor in his firm. She is the Real Living First Service Realty District Sales Manager – Headquarters. She is also a corporate trainer, Florida Realtors State Director 2015,2016,2017,2018 and Women's Council of Realtors- Miami Chapter Director of Programs 2018.

His oldest son, George Philip Jalil, is a financial analyst in Dallas, Texas. He has more than a decade in commercial real estate with a solid record for acquisitions and dispositions across full-cycle multifamily transactions, distressed debt, site analysis and land, and 1031 exchanges.

His second-oldest son, Michael, works for a real estate preservation company that takes foreclosures and preserves them. They make sure some of the foreclosed or vacant homes are ready for winter. The company is owned by San Roman.

George Jalil has three other children who are also successful. His daughter, Michelle, is a school teacher in Miami. His daughter, Melissa, works as a nurse’s aide for a cerebral palsy organization in Miami. And his son, Gregory, is an assistant movie producer in Dallas.

George Jalil recently became a grandfather. George Philip’s son, who is 2.5 months old as of March 2018, has brightened the lives of George and Marylou Jalil.
