JTHS-MIAMI President Barb Fox Proves it’s Not Too Late to Chase Your Dreams

by | May 23, 2018

MIAMI Staff

Growing up in New Jersey and working in the Washington, D.C. area, Barb Fox spent a lot of time dreaming about Florida. She wanted to be a Realtor here, but life got in the way.

Then in the midst of a divorce, Fox attended a Tony Robins seminar titled “Breaking Through.” The seminar pushes people to break through their limits and rediscover what they’re made of.

“I was in a boring field --- I was an accountant wearing a pocket protector,” Fox joked. “I always wanted to get out there and help people find their dream home. So I sold my (Virginia) house and moved to Florida. I told my kids you can come with me or you can stay with your dad, but I’m moving to Florida.”

Fox got her real estate license at the age of 38, launched her FOX REAL ESTATE TEAM firm with her daughter and chased her dream. Fox, 62, loves to volunteer (she even jokes she should make it a career), but she told herself she wouldn’t volunteer for organizations in Florida. She would relax here, but she soon got the itch to help and joined the JTHS-MIAMI Association of REALTORS® (JTHS-MIAMI).

The woman who said she wouldn’t volunteer again is now the 2018 JTHS-MIAMI President, leading Realtors in Palm Beach and Martin counties. She is volunteering countless hours in helping JTHS-MIAMI. She is dedicating to growing its JTHS-MIAMI leadership academy, which is a year-long program to develop future leaders. She’s writing a quarterly JTHS-MIAMI newsletter. She’s conducting JTHS-MIAMI past presidents/broker meetings, attending committee meetings and new member orientations.

“My goals are to give back to the members and to give back to an industry that has given me a great career,” Fox said.

Breaking Through

Fox was fortunate to stay home with her two children, Amy and Christopher, when they were growing up in the Washington, D.C./Virginia area.

A person who loves the outdoors, Fox worked for the Fur Information Council of America in Washington, D.C. The group represented fur manufacturers and retailers in the U.S. and Canada against animal activists. She was the controller and director of membership for a non-profit organization and would take her kids to protests so she would watch what was happening.

Earlier, she worked for a bank in the accounting department, where she started using her famous “pocket protector.” Later, she worked in the accounts receivable department of a cable company.

All along she thought of selling real estate in Florida. The idea fantasized her. The Tony Robins seminar lit a fire in her and she decided to “break through” all the way to Florida, where she bought a home in the Singer Island area of Palm Beach County after her divorce.

Selling Palm Beach Real Estate

Fox obtained her real estate salesman license and mortgage broker license in 1994 and her real estate broker license in 1996.

She started selling real estate part-time, spending her other hours as a bartender. Soon, she realized she couldn’t give real estate half of her time.

“I was making great money as a bartender, but if I wanted to be serious about real estate I had to make it full time,” Fox said.

Fox is a Realtor with One World Realty, Inc., which is based in Palm Beach County’s Singer Island. Fox has sold new construction, vacant land, commercial property, single-family homes, condominiums, and town homes south to West Palm Beach and north to Stuart, including properties on the ocean and on the Intracoastal Waterway.

Her daughter, Amy, joined her in real estate four years ago and together they formed the FOX REAL ESTATE TEAM.

Becoming JTHS-MIAMI President

Amy and 12 other family and friends attended the 2018 MIAMI Inaugural, where Fox was officially installed as the 2018 JTHS-MIAMI President.

Her youngest grandchild, 14-year-old Annabella who attends Palm Beach County’s prestigious Bak Middle School of the Arts, and just recently accepted into Dreyfoos High School of te Arts, helped write her grandmother’s inaugural speech. Fox also is proud of her grandson, 17-year-old Marley who will be graduating High School in Colorado and of course, Grandma will be there.

Fox’s 88-year-old mother attended the 2018 MIAMI Inaugural, where Fox gave an emotional speech thanking all of her family and friends in attendance. Her brother and many of her childhood girlfriends, who have been in contact for 57 years, attended the Inaugural. Her son Christopher, flew in from Colorado.

“I was very lucky I had so many people there,” Fox said.

Afterward, Fox’s mother asked her why she hadn’t told her she was going to bring her up on stage to pin her,

“I didn’t want you to back out, Mom,” Fox said with a laugh. “To have the girlfriends I have known all of my life there was pretty special. Having girlfriends for 57 years--- not too many people can say that.”

Fox lives with her daughter, Amy, and granddaughter, Annabella. Does Annabella want to join the FOX REAL ESTATE TEAM in the future?

“Not interested,” Fox said with a hearty laugh. “Annabella is into communication, speech and debate. She is the editor of the school yearbook. She wants to be Ellen DeGeneres. She wants to have her own talk show. She’s so smart she can do whatever she wants.”

Just like her grandma.
